The other обозначает другой (из двух), второй: he has two daughters, one is six, and the other is only two у него две дочери - одной шесть лет, другой только два. Когда речь идет о более чем двух предметах или лицах, употребляется форма множественного числа others с определенным артиклем или без артикля в зависимости от ситуации. The others соответствует русскому остальные, others - другие: I see only two of my books, where are the others? Я вижу только две свои книги, где все остальные? Let others talk, we must act. (6.) Словосочетания the other day, the other year соответствуют русским "на днях", "несколько лет тому назад", если событие относится к прошлому.
